tour starts with a drive along Louisville’s historic West Main Street,
where cast-iron, stone, and terra cotta facades add visual excitement
to the 19th century warehouses, second only to New York City’s SoHo
district.
The group’s
first stop is a visit to the LOUISVILLE SLUGGER MUSEUM, voted one of the
top five plant tours in the United States. Watch as bats are handcrafted
much as they were when the first Louisville Slugger was turned in 1884.
Before leaving you can spend some time in the tour center browsing the
history of “America’s Pastime” featuring mementos from
Babe Ruth to Ken Griffey, Jr. Each guest will receive a miniature bat
at the end of the tour. www.sluggermuseum.org

group will have the special privilege of visiting the FRAZIER HISTORICAL
ARMS MUSEUM, which opened on Main Street in May of 2004 to rave reviews.
With three floors of exhibits, two re-enactment areas, audio-visual, multi-media
and interactive displays, the facility holds over 1,000 years of U.S.
and British history under one roof. www.frazierarmsmuseum.org

9:00 AM – 3:00 PM RIVER CITY TOUR Step
back in time and experience Clarksville and Jeffersonville, Indiana as
well as Louisville, Ky. as they were during their days as thriving river
cities. Our first stop is the FALLS OF THE OHIO STATE PARK located on
the north shore of the Ohio River in Clarksville, across the river from
Louisville. The 220 acres of fossil beds adjacent to the “Falls”
area, is the largest exposed Devonian fossil bed in the world, dating
back three hundred and fifty million years. In the FALLS INTERPRETIVE
CENTER, visitors take a walking tour through time as the geological, historical,
and cultural evolution of the Falls of the Ohio unfold. Life-like models
including a mammoth, bison, Native American, birds and fish help visitors
understand the various populations that have left their mark at the Falls
of the Ohio.
The steamboat
is the machine that changed the pioneer’s isolated and often perilous
existence on the frontier outpost into a settled life on a farm or in
a town. It changed the world of Daniel Boone into the world of Mark Twain.
The Howard Shipyard began in the spring of 1834 when founder James Howard,
at the age of 19, built his first steamboat. As you visit the 22-room
mansion, which is home to the HOWARD STEAMBOAT MUSEUM, you will gain an
appreciation for the steamboat as well as the significant mark on history
left by the Howard family. www.steamboatmuseum.org
Next, visit
the KENTUCKY DERBY MUSEUM, featuring exciting exhibits dedicated to the
one hundred and thirty-eight year history of the “Greatest two minutes
in sports.” Two floors of hands on displays, artifacts, memorabilia
and fine art, highlighted by an award-winning multi-media audio-visual
presentation of “The Greatest Race” takes viewers through
the excitement of the first Saturday in May. A walking tour of legendary
Churchill Downs includes the historic Grandstand and Paddock area, weather
permitting. www.derbymuseum.org
While visiting
the museum, the guests will have time to enjoy lunch on their own at the
Derby Café.

PM BUSES BEGIN BOARDING FOR BELLE OF LOUISVILLE DINNER CRUISE AND CEILIDH
7-10 PM Join
in a Celtic Evening on the Ohio River aboard one of America’s treasures!
This is why we chose to use her likeness as the emblem for our 2005 AGM.
The steamboat
now known as the Belle of Louisville first floated on the Allegheny River
at Pittsburgh. She was built there by James Rees & Sons Company for
the West Memphis Packet Company in 1914. Her original name was the Idlewild,
and her sturdy, well-built frame sat atop a steel hull that needed only
five feet of water to float. Such a shallow draft allowed her passage
on practically every navigable waterway in the country – a feature
she has used to its full advantage throughout her remarkable life. The
Idlewild operated as a passenger ferry and in 1920 began a “tramp’s”
life. “Tramping” was a term used when steamboats traveled
from town to town doing excursions from points along a river. During WWII
she did her duty and was outfitted to push oil barges along the river.
She also served as a floating USO nightclub. In 1947 she was sold to J.
Herod Gorsage who renamed her the Avalon. In 1949 she was bought by a
group of investors in Cincinnati and over the next 13 years she became
the most widely traveled river steamer in the country. By 1962 the Avalon
was a sorry sight. In desperate need of major repairs she was literally
days away from the scrap yard when an auctioneer offered to put the doomed
steamboat on the auction block. Her salvation came from Kentucky. At the
auction, Jefferson County Judge/Executive Marlow Cook, offered the highest
bid. He bought the boat for $34,000 with county funds. Along with a new
life on the Louisville waterfront came a new name – the Belle of
Louisville. Many hours went into repairing and restoring the boat. On
April 30, 1963 the Belle made her first cruise in a race against the Delta
Queen steamboat. That race was the beginning of an unparalleled river
tradition. The Belle and the Queen square off every year on the Wednesday
before the Kentucky Derby. The Belle is now recognized as the oldest river
steamboat still in operation. She was designated a National Historic Landmark
in 1989, and celebrated her 88th birthday in 2002. We felt that she truly
mirrored the strength and fortitude of our Scottish ancestors, and so
she was chosen as the emblem for this AGM. www.belleoflouisville.org
